The age-old adage “sharpen the axe before you cut the tree” is a powerful reminder of the importance of preparation. Before stepping into their roles as mentors, Neda Africa’s volunteers took this wisdom to heart in October 2024, participating in an intensive and enriching training session at Cemerem AB5, one of Taita Taveta University’s conference halls. Led by psychologist Nahashon Mwangi, the training was designed not just to equip them with the necessary skills to mentor children in the children’s home but also to foster their personal growth and development.
Armed with enthusiasm and a commitment to making a difference, our volunteers immersed themselves in topics that would prepare them for the responsibilities ahead. Mental health awareness provided them with insight into emotional well-being, both for themselves and for the children they mentor. Child protection and safeguarding sessions ensured they could create a secure and supportive environment. Self-awareness exercises helped them recognize their strengths, while study skills training offered practical techniques for helping children develop better learning habits. Peer counseling and character coaching further refined their abilities to guide and support young minds effectively.
But this training wasn’t just about serious discussions and technical knowledge. True to Neda Africa’s spirit, we infused the sessions with energy, laughter, and meaningful connections. Between deep dives into mentorship strategies, volunteers engaged in interactive games, problem-solving challenges, and team-building activities that brought out their creativity and strengthened their camaraderie. Laughter echoed through the hall as they tackled icebreakers, and friendships were formed through shared experiences that went beyond the classroom setting.
One of the most powerful moments came when volunteers reflected on their newfound understanding of the challenges children in the home face. They realized that mentorship goes beyond just offering guidance—it’s about building trust, being present, and showing up for those who need it the most. Equipped with this perspective, they left the training not just as volunteers, but as role models ready to make a lasting impact.
This was more than just a training—it was a transformation. The experience sharpened not just their skills but their hearts, reinforcing the belief that real change begins with preparation and a willingness to grow. As Neda Africa continues to expand its reach, we remain committed to nurturing volunteers who are ready to lead, inspire, and uplift those in need.
